If you have a trip to Tokyo during February, don’t miss out Exhibition of Japanese Suiseki in Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum by Nippon Suiseki Association, Inc.

Suiseki is the appreciation of uniquely shaped stones. Suiseki are displayed on a wooden base called a Daiza. Or the stone is then placed on a tray or  a ceramic bowl called Suiban or a bronze bowl called Doban.  The stones are usually chosen because they resemble mountains, waterfalls or figures. The 4th exhibition took place February 10 – 13, 2017, many stones came from Japan, USA, Italia, Malaysia, England, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain Switzerland, Denmark, Viet Nam and China…  Approximately 200 stones are displayed from those entered for consideration at the exhibition.

In 2017, the first time, Đai Bình river stone was displayed by me, Ninh Huu Hiep in Tokyo, Japan. I am proud of the stones from rivers of Vietnam with its smooth skin.

How to exhibit the stone:

First, you have to be a member of NSA.

Second, sending the photo of the stones to be exhibited for NSA’s choosing.

And then, have a trip to Japan or send the stone to NSA for exhibition.

Annual fee for members living abroad: 10,000 yen

History of The Nippon Suiseki Association (Source from website of The Nippon Suiseki Association)

May 1961: The Nippon Suiseki Association was established, and the head priest of Meiji-jingu, Kanroji Ukenaga, was named as its first president. Successive presidents have also come from Meiji-jingu.

July 1961: The Association held the first Nippon Suiseki Meihinten exhibition (sponsorship by the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs began with the 32nd Meihinten).

September 1970: We supported the management of the Japanese garden at the World EXPO held in Osaka, and a letter of thanks was conferred upon the association by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Ki’ichi Miyazawa.

April 1980: We supported the first World Bonsai and Suiseki Exhibition, sponsored by the Nippon Bonsai Association in Osaka.

May 1984: The first Nippon Suiseki Sogoten was held, and support was received from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.

June 1991: We conducted a special suiseki course at the first Asia-Pacific Bonsai & Suiseki Exhibition and Convention in Bali.

June 1993: We delivered another talk on suiseki at the second Asia-Pacific Bonsai & Suiseki Exhibition and Convention, this time in Hong Kong.

September 1993: The first Suiseki World EXPO was held at the Ueno Green Club in Tokyo, with participants from ten countries coming to participate (sponsored by the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs).

May 1995: In Singapore, we again spoke on suiseki at the third Asia-Pacific Bonsai & Suiseki Exhibition and Convention.

June 1995: At the invitation of the European Suiseki Association, we delivered courses on suiseki in England, Monaco, and Switzerland.

June 2000: The entire suiseki collection of Meiji-jingu was exhibited in the Nippon Suiseki Meihinten for the first time.

NSA continue to annually sponsor two major exhibitions in Tokyo: the Nippon Suiseki Meihinten, and the Nippon Suiseki Sogoten.
